چکیده

The use of intra-articular steroids in the treatment of osteo-arthritis of the knee joints has not been much discussed in the literature. Burgess (1957) states that intra-articular hydrocortone is of most value in joints distended by synovial fluid. Williams (1958) found that hydrocortisone tertiarybutylacetate was effective over a longer period than hydrocortisone, but that both might dramatically relieve symptoms, especially pain, for anything from 2 weeks to several months. Zuckner, Machek, and Ahern (1956) compared the effects of intra-articular hydrocortisone acetate and hydrocortisone tertiarybutylacetate in a number of rheumatic joints, including the knee. They found no significant difference between the two compounds, but stated that 80 per cent. of joints so treated, whether rheumatoid or osteo-arthritic, responded for periods varying from 3 weeks to several months. Hollander and Moore (1956), who studied the intra-articular temperature response to injection of hydrocortisone acetate and prednisone, found that osteo-arthritic joints had a higher temperature than the normal, and that the temperature rose after intra-articular injection. Most of their patients obtained partial or complete relief for a varying period after the injections. Miller, White, and Norton (1958) injected various substances into osteo-arthritic knees, including hydrocortisone, without notable effect. The purpose of the present investigation is two-fold: (i) To compare three of these preparations; (ii) To determine the value of intra-articular steroids in osteo-arthritis of the knees.

Treatment of Staphylococcal Joint Infection in the Rabbit by Administration of Systemic Antibiotics and Intra-articular Corticosteroids

Background/objective: Despite the present routine treatment of septic arthritis with antibacterial agents, articular damage is persistent and frequently leads to loss of joint function.  The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intra-articular corticosteroids added to systemic antibiotics in the treatment of experimental staphylococcal knee joint infection in rabbits. Methods: Thirty r...

Studies in osteo-arthritis using intra-articular temperature response to injection of hydrocortisone acetate and prednisone.

The use of intra-articular hydrocortisone acetate in the treatment of osteo-arthritis has been shown to produce a temporary improvement of symptoms in many cases (Hollander, Stoner, Brown, and De Moor, 1951), although enthusiasm for this method has been tempered by warnings of the possibility of increasing the damage in joints subjected to excessive use in the periods of freedom from symptoms (...

Histological assessment of intera articular injection of 90Y- hydroxyapatite radiocolloid in enrofloxacin induced rheumatoid arthritis in rat models   Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common and disabling diseases in societies that causes chronic synovial inflammation and joint damages. Several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments of RA have been developed...

Experimental Study on Protective Role of NSAID on Articular Cartilage Destruction in Septic Arthritis

Background: Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy are the cornerstones of treatment protocols in septic arthritis; however, in some circumstances, the diagnosis and initiation of treatment may be retarded by slow disease progression or the time when the patient’s condition precludes early surgery. Therefore, it is beneficial to find ways to reduce the amount of articular injury. This study a...
